The opening ceremonies for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics were held last night to kick off the event that will be taking place over the last couple weeks. NBC Sports is the exclusive provider for the Olympics in the US and they have now launched their NBC Sports App for Xbox One just in time.

NBC has previously had their own app for Xbox One where people could watch shows, but now they have their own NBC Sports App as well for not only the Olympics, but plenty of NBC events in the future like NFL Sunday Night Football games. This news came courtesy of a press release by NBC for the app.

“The Olympics are coming to Xbox and Samsung devices courtesy of the NBC Sports App. NBC Sports Groups announced that its live streaming product is now available for the Xbox streaming platform and select Samsung devices for authenticated pay-TV subscribers. The platforms join Amazon Fire, Apple TV, Chromecast, Comcast’s X1, Roku, Win10, Apple iOS and Android devices that will have access to NBC’s more than 4,500 hours of streaming for the 2016 Summer Olympics.”

The only bad part here is that you will have to be a cable TV subscriber, which kind of defeats the purpose somewhat since you could just be watching on TV. The good news is that the number of cable TV providers that you can sign in with is rather large, so chances are your company will be on the list.

In total, the NBC Sports App will over over 4,500 hours of streaming coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympics, so definitely make sure to download the app if you plan on watching some of the events between your gaming sessions.
