Nier: Automata leads the software chart this week in Japan, beating most predictions and achieving one of the bigger debuts of the year so far, even surpassing the numbers of Resident Evil 7. The various new game releases give PlayStation 4 a boost in sales, which also benefits from the launch of the new Glacier White model.

In the week before the launch of Nintendo Switch, Sony has made sure to get advantage ofthe lack of any significant home console competition. Two big software releases and a new PS4 model colored in white have given the console the best week since the holidays. A very welcome boost that solidifies its position as a bigger seller than PlayStation 3 launch aligned.

The top selling game of the week is Nier: Automata, a futuristic action role-playing game developed by experts in the genre Platinum Games. The title offers rabid combats in 60FPS with original shifts in gameplay depending on the perspective that the camera takes in each occasion. It also represents one of the bigger recent successes for the studio who made Bayonetta 2, and a much needed triumph after the cancellation of Scalebound for Xbox One.

Nier: Automata presents a conflict between androids and machines, in a world where humanity has been exctinct for a long time. It’s a sequel of sorts of the original Nier for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, although it also works as a standalone story, considering that Automata introduces a completely new set of characters. The new game manages more than double the sales of its predecessor, which sold 60.174 in PS3 and 11.380 in Xbox 360 in its debut back in 2010.

Elsewhere in the charts, the other big launch of the week is the fifth entry in the veteran Super Robot Wars series, while The Witch and the Hundred Knights 2 is the failure story of the week. There is also a remarkable number of games that have minimal drops, which is specially encouraging in the case of Nioh.
