It’s been a while since we have seen a movie based on any Nintendo properties. The main reason for the long wait is because the Super Mario Bros. movie turned out to be garbage. The company however is interested to get back into movies and might release another one very soon.
Japanese website, Asahi, had a chance to interview Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima and Kimishima discussed about the company’s intentions to reenter the movie industry.
Nintendo wants to produce movies where they have a lot of creative freedom. Kimishima said he wanted a system where “we can do as much as we can ourselves.” Basically this means they don’t want a movie studio to call all of the shots for them.
Kimishima then interestingly said that their first new movie should be ready in the next 2 or 3 years. Sadly we’re not sure what they are planning right now, but anything should be better than the aforementioned Super Mario Bros. movie.
Nintendo has the right mindset on how they want to make movies on their own terms. The very bad video game and comic book movies usually result in studio interference because they inexplicably change everything for no good reason. Thankfully, this has changed over the years thanks to Marvel as they have been able to make movies that are mostly comic book accurate.
