The Overwatch Twitter account has announced that the multiplayer shooter is having a new event next week to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Overwatch Year of the Rooster begins on January 24 and Blizzard has not announced any details regarding the event as of now. So far all we have to go on are new skins for both Mei and D.Va which were tweeted out by the Overwatch and Korean Overwatch accounts respectively.
Given previous events though, we know what to expect with this one. Similar to all the previous events, this event will probably have a new batch of limited time cosmetic items that fit the theme of Chinese New Year, or to be more specific, the Year of the Rooster. We already have images for both Mei and D.Va in more traditional outfits to celebrate the occasion, so it won’t be too surprising to see other characters following the trend.
Just like the previous events, Year of the Rooster will most likely have a special brawl as well. The Summer Games event gave us Lúcioball, Halloween Terror had Junkenstein’s Revenge, and the recent Winter Wonderland event had Mei’s Snowball Offensive. Given that Mei is the only Chinese character in the Overwatch roster, we might see another event with her in the spotlight.
If Year of the Rooster follows the trend of previous Overwatch events, we should expect it to last for around three weeks which means it’ll end on February 14. While this might rule out a fully fleshed out Valentine’s Day event, there’s still a possibility of them having a small celebration with the addition of new cosmetics similar to when they added a bunch of sitting and laughing emotes.
Overwatch Year of the Rooster hits live servers on January 24, just a few days before Chinese New Year. Expect an update from Blizzard in the coming days with regards to more details on the upcoming event.
