Police say a man broke into six rental cars at a Florida airport and took $4,400 in property, then came back four days later

Randall Duffy Walterhoefer, a 56-year-old Fort Lauderdale resident, is facing multiple felony charges after authorities accused him of burglarizing seven rental cars at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The suspect allegedly targeted vehicles in the airport’s Rental Car Center garage at 600 Terminal Drive, where he reportedly removed keys or key fobs from the cars, Local 10 reported.

The Fort Lauderdale man’s legal trouble stems from a series of incidents in September. According to an arrest warrant, Walterhoefer is accused of burglarizing six different vehicles on Sept. 12. The warrant lists a 2025 Hyundai Genesis, a 2025 Mercedes C300, a 2026 Mercedes MC3R, a 2025 Kia Carnival, a 2025 Mazda CX90, and a 2026 Cadillac CT5A.

Investigators claim he walked away with about $4,400 worth of property during those six burglaries. The warrant alleges that Walterhoefer returned to the same garage four days later and entered a 2026 BMW X3 belonging to Avis/Budget. According to the warrant, an additional $1,800 worth of property was taken from that vehicle.

Seven alleged burglaries added up to nine felony counts

A judge signed the arrest warrant on Tuesday, and booking records confirm that Walterhoefer was taken into custody the following day. He is now facing a total of seven counts of burglary of an unoccupied conveyance while unarmed. He also faces two counts of grand theft involving property valued between $750 and $5,000.

The court set bond at $5,000 for each of the seven burglary counts and $1,000 for each of the two grand theft counts, bringing Walterhoefer’s total bond to $37,000. He is expected to answer to all nine felony counts as the case moves through the Broward County court system.

Vehicle break-ins have been a recurring problem elsewhere too. Earlier this year, Austin police warned residents about armed suspects breaking into cars parked in residential driveways.

Commenters on Local 10’s posts reacted with a mix of skepticism and confusion. One called the case “just another orchestrated ripoff,” while another wondered whether he planned to use the keys later “when he saw the same car” on the road.
