Update: Nintendo has confirmed to Gamespot that the New Nintendo 3DS will remain region-locked. You can read more about the details right here.
Original Story: Well this is certainly some surprising and unexpected news that we really hope turns out to be true. Region locking is something that has been around forever in gaming, which prevented gamers from playing foreign versions of games on US consoles and vice versa. However, according to a rumor, Nintendo may finally be ditching this practice with their New Nintendo 3DS.
TiLMEN of Nintendomination took to Twitter to post the following involving the New Nintendo 3DS:
- “RUMOR!!! An Alien told me that there is a possibility, that the “NEW
#Nintendo#3DS” won’t have#RegionLocking & Big NNiD changes incomming”
Nintendomination is known for their wide array of YouTube videos related to Nintendo, so they do likely have some sources involved with Nintendo. However, one would assume that a much larger and relevant outlet would get this news first. This is something that Nintendo will likely hold close to the vest and announce during a Nintendo Direct or something if it is actually true.
After the very popular petition to making Nintendo systems region free, this would be a great first step along the way. Obviously it wouldn’t help the Wii U at all, but the 3DS has quite the library of games that haven’t made their way to the US that I know I’d love to play.
