UPDATE: Nintendo has spoken with the Wall Street Journal and denied the rumor that the NX will run on Android.

The Nintendo NX was namedropped not long ago by president Satoru Iwata as the next Nintendo system, but we still know absolutely nothing about it. In fact, we don’t even know if it’s actually a console or handheld, though most seem to assume it is a console of some sort. While Nintendo has said they won’t be revealing or even discussing the Nintendo NX at E3, a very interesting report has surfaced that gives us some information on the system’s OS.

Japanese business newspaper Nikkei, which has been very accurate with Nintendo info in the past, had an editorial today about Nintendo and their new partnership with DeNA. Within this article however, a very major bomb is dropped, which has been translated by NeoGAF’s duckroll. According to Nikkei, their insider source has told them that the Nintendo NX will feature an Android based OS.

Hearing that Nintendo may utilize an Android OS could be worrisome, as that would instantly make the system sound like a mobile based system or something like the Ouya. However, this is just the infrastructure and could very well be something like a typical console, even with the OS. Regardless, we still don’t know much about the Nintendo NX so it’s hard to speculate much more about how Android could be used inside it.
