Shenmue III finally has an official release date. One of the highest profile crowd-funded games of the last few years will head out to fans on August 27th, 2019. The announcement comes out of Gamescom 2018 where publisher on the game, Deep Silver, released a new Shenmue trailer as well. You can catch the new Gamescom trailer for Shenmue III above, and in it you’ll get a glimpse at some new characters in the game as well as some new gameplay.
The wait has been long for Shenmue fans. The last game in the series released in 2001, if you want to discount the mobile title that released in 2010. Still, it’s one of the most beloved franchises from the Dreamcast era. There were so many fans asking for a third game in the series and that wish turned into a reality when Sony announced the beginning of crowd-funding for the title back at E3 2015. They also managed to break the Kickstarter site in the process by doing a live reveal during their press conference.
Ys Net garnered nearly 70,000 backers for the Kickstarter who pledged over six million dollars for the project, well exceeding the $2 million dollar goal. Though it has gotten a ton of support in terms of backers and their cash, it hasn’t been the smoothest of rides for Shenmue III in terms of development. The game was originally slated to arrive in 2017, but has been delayed numerous times.
Hopefully this release date sticks for Shenmue III, but with one year to release anything could happen. Shenmue III has been confirmed for release on the PlayStation 4 and PC on August 27th, 2019.
