Earlier this month we got the surprising announcement from Shigeru Miyamoto during the Apple Event that Mario was headed for mobile devices with Super Mario Run, which is set to launch later this year. However, despite having the obvious goal of the game performing well, that isn’t the only intention that Nintendo has for it and other apps like it.

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto recently did an interview with My Nintendo News about Super Mario Run and the mobile gaming craze in general, saying that it’s something that Nintendo hopes can bring people back to their platforms. He said the following:

“For many years our mission in approaching hardware has been our goal of expanding the number of people playing games. Now, people are having these interactive experiences through their smart devices and so that’s accomplished this great mission of helping to turn more people into gamers. We’re using this opportunity to bring our characters to this audience and let them experience the fun of our games and hopefully bring them back to our platforms.”

This is definitely a smart move on Nintendo’s part, as the impact that Pokemon GO has had on Pokemon sales on their platforms has been very impressive so far. While it likely won’t hit the popularity levels of Pokemon GO, it will be very interesting to see how Super Mario Run is received by casual mobile gamers.
