After only being titled a couple of hours ago, we already have a full gameplay trailer for Sonic Forces, the game that used to simply go by the name Project Sonic 2017. The game is a full blown 3D title, in the same vein as Sonic Adventure from the Sega Dreamcast. Little else is know about Sonic Forces though, except that it should arrive this holiday season for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

“Sonic blasts through a city under siege by Death Egg Robot sentinels in this first look at Sonic Forces,” explains the YouTube description for the video that went up a couple of hours ago. The video is quite impressive, showing high quality visuals and fast paced gameplay.

The Sonic series has been in some big flux in the last few years, alternating between more classic approaches and more inventive ones. This has resulted in some great games, but also some duds. Sonic fans are understandably cautious about the reveal of any new game in the series, as they can often look amazing but turn out not so great. We’ve seen the opposite as well though, with many fantastic additions to the Sonic catalog.

Will Sonic Forces be the former or the latter? We’ll find out later this year, but the Sonic Team has been doing very well as of late. Sonic Mania, which also saw a delay this morning, looks very good and seems like the return to classic 2D gameplay that fans have been asking for. Sonic Forces might be the 3D equivalent, giving fans that Sonic Adventure feel that has been missing for quite some time.

Watch for Sonic Forces when it hits this holiday season on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC to find out how it all turns out.
