Sonic Mania now has an official release date of August 15th for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. This date had been rumored for a while, mostly thanks to a couple of unfortunate leaks from retailers. It has now been made official though, along with a fairly low $19.99 price point, so fans can start getting excited for this nostalgic 2D experience.
“Developed by Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games in collaboration with SEGA of America, Sonic Mania celebrates the best of Classic Sonic, pushing the envelope forward with stunning 60 FPS gameplay and pixel-perfect physics,” explains Sega’s press release.
“Play as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles as you race through all-new Zones and fully re-imagined classics, each filled with exciting surprises and powerful bosses. Harness Sonic’s new drop dash, Tails’ flight, and Knuckles’ climbing abilities to overcome the evil Dr. Eggman’s robots. Discover a myriad of never-before-seen hidden paths and secrets. Welcome to the next level for the world’s fastest blue hedgehog!”
Sonic Mania is Sega’s best chance at truly recapturing the magic that was seen in the 2D Sonic classics. The series has meandered a bit over the last few years, with some games hitting the sweet spot of fast, frenetic fun, while others were a huge miss. Sonic Mania attempts to get back to the series’ roots, offering true 2D Sonic gameplay.
