A delay has been announced for Spelunky 2 by the game’s creator. Derek Yu recently took to Twitter to deliver some bad news regarding the game. Spelunky was originally planned for a 2019 release, but the developer revealed that he didn’t think they were going to make it.
Development going well for Spelunky but it sounds like they need more time
“I don’t think we’re going to get to release Spelunky 2 this year,” says Yu.  “Development is still going well and we’re not far off target, but the density and detail of the game is demanding more time,” said the developer.
Spelunky 2 saw a ton of fan fare when it was announced back at the PlayStation Paris Games Week. However, Mossmouth Games hasn’t been too vocal in communicating what to expect from Spelunky 2, which Yu also took time to address.

Yu says, “It can be tough balancing communication and dev time (and not spoiling too much). When things are quiet, we’re just working away. There will be more updates coming, but for now we’re focusing on development!”
While we haven’t seen much of the game, Yu says that internally they are adding more details to the levels and adding contrast to make details show better on the screen,” a by product of general feedback from the community following the game after watching the trailer.
Regardless, it’s at least going to be a few more months before Spelunky 2 arrives. Yu wasn’t explicitly clear when to expect the game, but it’s not going to be in the next four and a half months.
