During today’s E3 Nintendo Direct the company finally unveiled the full name of the upcoming Switch title. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is coming soon, but more importantly they unveiled the character roster, which was simply massive. Every single character that has been featured in a Smash game will be in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate from the start.
UPDATE: There will also be new characters, including Inkling and Daisy. The latter is a reskin of Peach, while Inkling is wholly new. And, because Nintendo has apparently been on the internet and heard its fans beg for it, Ridley has been added to the game as a playable fighter.
Players will still have to unlock these characters via gameplay, of course, but they’re in there, and they won’t cost a thing. Ice Climbers are back, after skipping the last game, Bayonetta, Cloud, Snake, and other third-party characters are returning. And the original roster are, of course back. Simply every character you can imagine has returned.
As series creator Masahiro Sakurai said, they have made the impossible possible. Before this unveiling fans spent hours and days speculating what characters could be returning, but few guessed that Nintendo had secured every single one. This also presents a massive balance challenge as the team has to get all of these characters onto a somewhat even playing field. We’ll see if they achieved this when the game launches, but given their amazing track record, it’s safe to assume they did a good job.
Expect more about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and all things Nintendo from E3 2018 soon.
