‘That’s my little boy, by the way’: Grieving mom finds a $705 ‘specimen’ charge on her $70,471 bill after losing her baby

Angela Gravette shared a video on TikTok and Instagram showing the $70,471.70 hospital bill she received nearly three months after losing her baby. The bill covered a D&C, or dilation and curettage, a surgical procedure that removes tissue from the uterus. Gravette made clear in her caption that she was not blaming her doctor, writing that “none of this is directed to her at all.”

In the video, Gravette holds the bill up to the camera while trying to stay composed. “Just got my bill, bro,” she says before reading the total charges aloud. Insurance adjustments of $64,269.71 came off the total, which could still leave her family owing roughly $6,200.

Her frustration grows as she moves through the itemized charges, which include medications such as Phenergan and Zofran. One line hit harder than the rest. “Y’all, the specimen alone was $705. That’s my little boy, by the way,” Gravette says.

Every hour of her care came with its own price tag

Gravette says one hour of surgery cost $17,000, while one hour in the recovery room cost $5,446. “One hour to recover from having my baby taken out of me,” she says, adding that she felt rushed out of that room. Another line charged $6,994 for each additional 15 minutes of surgery.

Medical bills have become a heavy burden for many American families. Earlier this year, Miranda Kerr and Evan Spiegel helped erase $550 million in medical debt for about 260,000 Californians through a nonprofit.

my Dr did her absolute best with me and none of this is directed to her at all. I’m so thankful to have good insurance because a lot of people don’t. but man, this sucks so bad.

Gravette wrote that she is “so thankful to have good insurance because a lot of people don’t,” but added that the experience “sucks so bad.” Summing up, she told viewers it cost “$70,000 to lose your baby,” before even counting the emotional toll.

She also noted that her family now has “a big bill to pay for a baby that I don’t even have.” The statement is only the first bill the family has received, and Gravette wrote that they expect to be paying medical bills for a while.
