Update: According to a report from Gamespot, Hajime Tabata has confirmed the release date for the game will be in 2016!
Square Enix has now given an update to how much they have completed Final Fantasy XV. At this stage, it sounds like the release date goes further and further away.
The game’s director, Hajime Tabata, held another Active Time Report and gave an update on the development for the game. After so many years, only 65% of the game has been complete.
As of time of writing, it’s August 2015. A 2016 release date seems far away at this point. However, Square Enix knows a release date for the game already, but they’re not announcing it yet.
Kotaku shares the same type of concern. The likelihood of the game coming out in 2016 looks slim at this point. It feels like we might see the game in 2017 instead.
The good news is that Square Enix claims Final Fantasy XV is on schedule. The game is very huge, so it’s understandable it’s taking a long time to come out. Development is still ongoing and hasn’t been halted or anything like that.
Still, the game was originally announced as Final Fantasy Versus XIII back in 2006. However, Square Enix pretty much redid the whole game and development shifted from the PS3 to the PS4 and Xbox One consoles instead.
At its current state, Final Fantasy XV has technically only been in development since maybe 2011/2012. Every other thing that was done before was for Versus XIII on PS3.
If the game is indeed coming in 2017, this might mean the Final Fantasy 7 Remake isn’t coming out anytime soon either. Hopefully a 2016 release date slips in, but the lack of any announcements on that topic is concerning.
