Naughty Dog is aiming to for movie-like visuals in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
Naughty Dog has been known to push the boundaries when it comes to the visuals for their games. Crash Bandicoot was one of the best looking games for the PSOne console, while the Uncharted trilogy look brilliant on the PS3.
With the power of the PS4 console, Naughty Dog is hoping to make Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End look as amazing as possible. The studio’s lead character artist, Frank Tzeng, was interviewed by CG Master Academy to talk more about the game’s graphics.
First of all, he said that video game quality is getting “really close to film right now“. He praised all of the work that has been done to Nathan Drake in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. He said Drake looks like a “film character to me“.
He also said the PS4 console allows them to put more polygons on the screen compared to the PS3. Because of this, they were able to put in more “high res maps” and also add more expressions and detail on the character models. He mentioned these things are the stepping stones for the video game industry to match film-like quality visuals. He concluded that in a few year’s time, the industry will get there.
Hopefully Tzeng isn’t stretching the truth and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End really does look amazing when it comes out later this year.
