Warner Bros has finally released the first trailer for the new Tomb Raider movie starring Alicia Vikander. The film is loosely based on the 2013 videogame reboot by Square Enix, and so it presents a young Lara Croft exploring an island filled with dangerous secrets. However, the film veers away from the original story by introducing elements from other entries, like a strong focus on the disappearance of Lara’s father.
While on the surface this new film adaptation seemed to introduce a different perspective to the earlier movies with Angelina Jolie, the trailer suggests that Alicia Vikander’s portrayal is actually a mix of the classic defiant attitude of the classic version with the more innocent representation from the modern games.
On the other hand, many of the elements from the 2013 game remain intact in the film, such as Lara’s outfit and more adventurous look, her distinctive bow and climbing axe, and the setting of the island, which really seems to be Yamatai, although they make no explicit references to it in the trailer.
Here is an overview of the project via Warner Bros: Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she finds herself on the island where her father disappeared. From Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, Tomb Raider is the story that will set a young and resolute Lara Croft on a path toward becoming a global hero. The film stars Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl) in the lead role, under the direction of Roar Uthaug (The Wave), with Oscar-winner Graham King (The Departed) producing under his GK Films banner. The film’s production begins on the heels of the 20th anniversary of the wildly popular videogame franchise from Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal.
Tomb Raider premieres on March 16, 2018. Watch the trailer below.
