‘We were the only Black people there’: Woman and her mother removed from coworker’s wedding ceremony, and the way it was handled has people talking

Guess who’s not catching the bouquet

A woman shared a video on TikTok that shows her and her mother getting kicked out of a wedding ceremony. The video has gotten more than 3.7 million views and started a big conversation about race and how weddings should be handled. According to @damnnnndee, the postmaker, everything seemed fine when they first got to the wedding. Then, something unexpected happened.

According to Daily Dot, people welcomed them, and they sat down to watch the ceremony. But then, right in the middle of the vows, someone came up and told them they needed to leave. They were only supposed to be at the reception part, not the actual ceremony.

“And we were the only Black people there, so from hindsight, it looks crazy,” @damnnnndee said in her TikTok video. In the footage, you can see a wedding coordinator walking up to them and asking them to go back inside. After they got up and started leaving, the coordinator said, “Please don’t be disrespectful.”

They could have said something way earlier

A few days later, @damnnnndee made another video explaining more about what happened. She said she gets that some couples only want family at their ceremony. But she thinks the whole thing was done in the worst way possible. There were so many chances for someone to tell them about the mix-up before they sat down.

“Even if they stopped us at the door,” she said, “that might have hurt my feelings a little bit, not gonna lie. But at the end of the day, it wouldn’t have been as humiliating as getting pulled from a chair.” She also mentioned that they showed up early, so the wedding party had plenty of time to clear things up before everything went wrong.

People in the comments had all kinds of reactions. Some tried to figure out what really happened. One commenter said, “Something tells me we are not getting the full story here…” Others looked at what was actually said in the video. April Padjen wrote, “At the end of the video the woman states, ‘you were invited to the reception’ so that means you were not invited to the ceremony.” Rachaellta asked, “hold up…was your family the only one they made stand inside?”

Other people said they would have just left if they found out about the situation. Krystal wrote, “If I found I out I was only invited to the reception, I’d take my gift and leave.” Bobbie Jo pointed out, “I mean… aren’t they literally saying their vows?” Caroline made her thoughts clear by saying, “Invited to the reception is not the same as being invited to the wedding. Period.” The whole situation is similar to other recent times when celebrities and regular people got called out for posting things online that upset people.

In her second video, @damnnnndee tried to explain everyone’s side of the story. “Long story short, something could have been said, none of it would have happened. It’s pretty simple, honestly,” she said. She wanted people to know she was not trying to mess up anyone’s big day. She just thinks that if someone had talked to them earlier, the whole embarrassing moment could have been avoided. This whole debate shows how people keep arguing about the right way to handle tough situations online.
