A 12-year-old boy has woken up after being in a coma following a helicopter crash in California. Oliver Holland was hurt when the helicopter came down in Huntington Beach on October 11. Four other people were also injured in the accident.
According to People, the incident happened right before a local event called Cars ‘N Copters on the Coast. Oliver’s injuries were so bad that doctors put him into a coma to give his body time to recover.
When Oliver finally woke up over the weekend, it happened to be on his birthday. His family told him what had happened, and his response showed just how confused and shocked he was. His sister Madeline Ashwell said that Oliver asked two simple questions: “How did this happen?” and “Why did a helicopter land on me?”
The Recovery Road Has Been Long But Hopeful
The young boy needed several operations because of what happened to him. One of his lungs had collapsed, and there was bleeding inside his brain. These were serious problems that needed immediate medical attention.
Madeline explained to reporters that her brother just happened to be in the wrong spot when the helicopter fell. She said that if he had been standing just “five feet ahead” of where he was, the helicopter would have missed him completely.
People started a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for Oliver’s medical bills and support his family. By October 29, the campaign had brought in more than $113,000 from people wanting to help during this difficult time.
Madeline recently shared some positive news about how her brother is doing. She said Oliver “has made incredible progress” and does not need a breathing machine anymore.
According to Madeline, Oliver now knows who his family members are and can talk to them. He has also started moving different parts of his body again. She called these signs “huge milestones” and said the medical team looking after him thinks he is recovering well. The doctors believe Oliver is heading in the right direction.
The family understands that Oliver still has a lot of healing ahead of him. But they feel thankful for how much better he has gotten already. Madeline wrote a message thanking everyone who has been there for Oliver, saying “Your kindness, encouragement, and support have given our family so much strength during this time.” While this story shows hope for recovery, other incidents have ended in tragedy.
