Microsoft has announced that the Xbox 360 once again took the title for top sales in July.  The month was a horrible one for the industry, one that NPD claims as the worst we’ve seen since 2006.  According to data from the NPD group, Microsoft managed to sell 277,000 Xbox 360s.  Not a huge number, but enough to take home 45% share of the domestic current generation console market.  Microsoft, who also reiterated its strength in the United States told us that they’ve been selling “more units than any other console for 13 of the past 14 months.”

Year over year the console sales were lower for the company, but this comes after a year when a newly redesigned Xbox 360 S was put to market.  Microsoft who touts Gears of War 3 as the entertainment launch of the year, expects big things from September through the holiday season with Gears leading the way, followed by Forza, and the near exclusive Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Microsoft expects that the Xbox 360 will maintain its lead on competitors throughout the rest of the year to finish  “as the number one console worldwide”.
