Microsoft has announced that Xbox Live multiplayer will be free for all Xbox 360 owners this weekend, May 1st to May 3rd. While Xbox Live might have had some issues last night, it is looking better this morning, so players should have no trouble logging on and playing some games. You don’t have to do anything to unlock the feature, simply power on your Xbox 360 and hop into any multiplayer game. The game will act as though you have an Xbox Live Gold account, at least for the multiplayer feature that is.

This special promotion is taking place throughout all regions, so no matter where you are you can log in and play some Xbox Live multiplayer for free through the weekend. It’s important to make that distinction since Xbox Live Gold members also receive free games and special discounts through the Games with Gold program. These parts of the membership will still be locked to those with full, paid for accounts.

Just as a note, you do still need to have an active Xbox Live account to take advantage of this offer. The only difference here is that it does not have to be a Gold membership, which usually costs $59.99 a year.
