The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee released new photos from Jeffrey Epstein’s estate. Bill Gates appears in two of these pictures, bringing back questions about his past connection with the convicted sex offender. The committee plans to release about 95,000 photos total, and this is just the first set.
According to Politico, one photo shows Gates standing next to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who used to be called Prince Andrew. Epstein does not appear in either photo that shows Gates. The committee confirmed this detail when they released the images as part of their investigation into the Epstein estate.
The second photo shows a younger Gates next to a man who appears to be one of Epstein’s longtime pilots. The committee released these photos because they consider them important for their review of documents from the Epstein estate.
The Prince Andrew connection makes this photo especially damaging
Mountbatten-Windsor faced a civil lawsuit in 2019 from Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s accusers. She claimed he sexually assaulted her, though he denied these claims. He has not been charged with any crime in the U.K. or the U.S., but his friendship with Epstein caused serious damage to his reputation. His appearance in the photo with Gates creates terrible optics for the Microsoft co-founder.
Gates has talked about his Epstein connection several times before. He told PBS NewsHour in 2021 that he met with Epstein for dinners because the financier promised to help raise money for global health projects from his wealthy contacts. When those donations never came through, Gates said he stopped the meetings completely. Like other tech billionaires managing their public image amid controversies, Gates called those meetings “a mistake.”
The connection affected Gates’ personal life too. His former wife, Melinda French Gates, said she strongly disliked her husband meeting with Epstein. She suggested these meetings played a big role in their 2021 divorce.
French Gates met Epstein only once and described the experience in a 2022 CBS interview as disturbing. She said, “I regretted it from the second I stepped in the door. He was abhorrent, he was evil personified. I had nightmares about it afterwards.”
In a January 2023 interview, Gates was asked if French Gates warned him about potential sexual compromising through his ties with Epstein. He denied this and said, “No! I had dinner with him, and that’s all.” The revelations continue to surprise people, much like other strange discoveries making headlines recently.
Gates’ representatives and the Gates Foundation have not commented on the newly released photos. The House Oversight Committee’s release of these images will likely keep this story in the news as more photos come out.
