Concerns are growing that President Donald Trump could use a crisis, like the ongoing situation with Iran, to cancel the upcoming midterm elections. Even former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene is not ruling it out. The midterms are expected to favor Democrats, who could potentially take control of the House of Representatives.
Greene, who has publicly criticized Trump’s recent military action against Iran, responded to speculation circulating online. Conservative podcaster Shannon Joy posted on X, suggesting that Trump “doesn’t seem to care about the midterms” and wondered if he might “declare a ‘national emergency’ because of Iran (or some other manufactured crisis) and try to cancel the elections in November?” Greene responded, “Yeah, I could see it. INSANE.”
According to Mediaite, Greene pointed to a poll from the Trump administration asking about acceptable casualties in an Iran war, posting, “How about ZERO you bunch of sick f—ing liars. We voted for America First and ZERO wars.” In another post, she wrote, “This is NOT freeing the Iranian people!!! This is murdering their children!!! WTF are you insane people doing??? AMERICA DOES NOT SUPPORT THIS!!!”
Trump’s justification for striking Iran conflicts with what key Republican senators are saying
Critics have questioned the timing of Trump’s decision to strike Iran, especially since he said back in June that U.S. strikes had already “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Trump told journalist Jacqui Heinrich on Sunday that if the U.S. and Israel had not launched the missile strikes, Iran “would have had a nuclear weapon within two weeks.”
Former President Biden also weighed in around this time, with Biden accusing Trump of planning to steal the midterms just hours before the U.S. launched strikes on Iran. However, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) appeared to contradict that claim. Speaking to Margaret Brennan, Cruz said, “I don’t have present-day intelligence on what progress they had made toward rebuilding nuclear weapons since we bombed their facilities.”
He added, “I have no indication that they were anywhere close to getting nuclear weapons, because our bombing was devastating.” Cruz did say he had urged Trump that “now is the time” to strike, but his view of how close Iran was to getting a nuclear weapon is clearly different from the president’s.
Trump has also outlined his possible exit strategies from Operation Epic Fury, including one that could end the conflict within just two or three days. Adding further context to the current fears is a report from January about a meeting Trump had with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on August 18. During that Oval Office meeting, Zelenskyy was discussing the conditions needed to restart elections in his war-torn country.
Trump reportedly said aloud, “So you say, during the war, you can’t have elections.” He then added, “So you mean if we happen to be in a war with somebody, no more elections. I wonder what the fake news would say to that.”
That past comment, combined with the current military situation with Iran, has added fuel to concerns about whether the midterm elections could be affected. Greene’s willingness to say she could see such a scenario happening has only made those worries louder.
