A high-ranking United Nations diplomat has suspended his duties, claiming the international body is quietly preparing for a nuclear strike on Iran. Mohamad Safa served as the Permanent Representative of the Patriotic Vision Organization (PVA) to the UN for nearly twelve years. He publicly announced his resignation, saying he could no longer stand by as a “witness to this crime against humanity.”
Safa’s departure comes amid rising tensions in West Asia. He accused senior UN leadership of actively suppressing dissent to serve a “powerful lobby” that he claims is pushing a pro-war agenda against Iran through a misinformation campaign about Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
In his posts on X, Safa wrote, “I don’t think people understand the gravity of the situation as the UN is preparing for possible nuclear weapon use in Iran,” noting that Tehran is home to nearly 10 million people.
The diplomat alleges a coordinated cover-up of war crimes within the UN system
He described his resignation as a whistleblowing action, writing, “I gave up my diplomatic career to leak this information. I suspended my duties so as not to be part of or a witness to this crime against humanity, in an attempt to prevent a nuclear winter before it is too late.”
Safa’s resignation letter covered three years of growing frustration, alleging that senior UN officials “abuse their power to serve that lobby” and “effectively shield decision-makers” from war crimes designations.
According to Safa, these officials “refuse to describe what is happening in Gaza as genocide, what is happening in Lebanon as war crimes and ethnic cleansing, that the war on Iran is illegal under international law, that Iran posed no imminent threat to world peace.” Reports suggest that Trump’s Iran war briefing concerns his allies, adding another layer of uncertainty to the situation.
He also claimed that after October 2023, his attempts to present a different perspective led to “death threats for him and his family” and professional abandonment by the UN. He said he would not return to his duties until the “reform process outlined by the UN Secretary-General is meaningfully implemented.”
Before suspending his duties, Safa held significant standing within the UN system. Since 2013, he had served as executive director of Patriotic Vision (PVA), an organization with special consultative status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). In 2016, he was nominated as its Permanent Representative, leading the PVA delegation for over a decade under various Secretaries-General and Human Rights Council Presidents.
Safa further alleged that senior officials deployed a “misinformation campaign claiming an Iran nuclear threat” to push for a broader regional war. He claimed that social media algorithms and global media were used to “deceive you into believing that Iran posed an imminent threat to world peace,” comparing the tactic to justifications used in Gaza and Lebanon.
The tensions extend beyond diplomacy, as Iran’s parliament speaker warned bond investors about military targets, a move that has rattled financial markets. He ended his public appeal by urging people to “take the streets” and “protest for our humanity and future,” saying that “only the people can stop it.”
