Donald Trump has warned Cuba to “make a deal” or face serious consequences after cutting off a major lifeline. He said no more Venezuelan oil or money will go to the communist Caribbean island that has been a US enemy for decades. The warning came as Trump increased pressure on the Cuban government through his social media platform.
Cuba depends heavily on Venezuela for oil to keep its economy running. According to The Guardian, the country prepared for possible widespread protests after Nicolás Maduro was removed as Venezuela’s leader. Without Venezuelan oil shipments, Cuba could face severe energy shortages and economic problems that might spark public unrest across the island nation.
Trump posted on Truth Social that there will be no more oil or money going to Cuba. THERE WILL BE NO MORE OIL OR MONEY GOING TO CUBA – ZERO!” he wrote. “I strongly suggest they make a deal, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.”
Venezuela’s oil cutoff leaves Cuba in a difficult position
Venezuela is Cuba’s biggest oil supplier. But shipping records show no oil shipments have left Venezuelan ports for Cuba since last week. This happened after US forces captured Maduro during a strict US oil blockade.
Dozens of Venezuelan and Cuban security workers were killed in the US raid. After this, Trump said Cuba was “ready to fall.” He pointed out the island’s deep money problems and said it would be hard for Havana to survive without cheap Venezuelan oil.
Earlier on Sunday, Trump reposted a message saying US Secretary of State Marco Rubio could become Cuba’s new president. Rubio’s parents came from Cuba as immigrants. Trump added that this “sounds good to me.” This isn’t the first time Trump’s administration has made bold claims that sparked controversy.
Trump then said Cuba has lived for many years on large amounts of oil and money from Venezuela. In exchange, Cuba gave security services to the last two Venezuelan dictators. But he said this won’t happen anymore.
Trump claimed most of those Cubans are dead from last week’s US attack. He said Venezuela doesn’t need protection anymore from the people who held them hostage for so many years. The president has recently shown his territorial expansion ambitions with other nations as well.
Cuba’s president, Miguel Diaz-Canel, promised to defend the country against any attack. He wrote on X that Cuba is a free and independent nation. He said, “Cuba is a free, independent and sovereign nation. No one tells us what to do.”
