‘Big news for the USA!’: Trump celebrates firing 271,000 federal workers despite claiming to be a ‘president for the workers’

Make this make sense, please.

Donald Trump has upset many voters after he celebrated cutting over 270,000 federal jobs during his second time as president. This comes even though he said he was a “president for the workers.” On December 26, Trump shared a post on Truth Social showing a screenshot from the White House’s Rapid Response account. The post celebrated cutting 271,000 US government jobs, bringing the total number of federal workers to the lowest level since 2014.

According to Unilad, the White House Rapid Response account wrote “Promises made, promises kept.” Trump replied to this by saying “Big news for the USA!” During his election campaign and after returning to the White House, Trump has repeatedly talked about bringing jobs back to American workers and lowering unemployment.

This latest celebration seems to go against those promises. Most of the job losses came from the Department of Government Efficiency’s work to make federal services smaller. The Trump administration made big cuts to areas it thought were not needed.

The administration cut jobs across multiple major departments

The departments that lost the most jobs include the Department of Homeland Security, Internal Revenue Service, United States Agency for International Development, Department of Energy, and the Department of Defense. Many job losses also happened because of the government shutdown, which ran from October 1 to November 12, 2025. This was the longest shutdown in US history.

Trump created DOGE with billionaire Elon Musk leading it. Trump said DOGE’s goal was to make “a smaller government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy.” The plan was to cut unnecessary services and reduce government spending. Trump signed an executive order saying the organization would work through July 2026. Some have raised concerns about what lies ahead in Trump’s future as these controversial decisions continue.

However, this did not happen as planned. Musk was removed from his position, and DOGE no longer exists, according to a Reuters report. Scott Kupor, the Office of Personnel Management Director, said the department shut down after only eight months.

Very little money was saved during that time. Critics of the administration have become more vocal, with one recent incident showing Trump officials facing public confrontation over these policy decisions.

Even after DOGE ended, federal job cuts continued. Many employees, both long-time workers and new hires, lost their jobs. The cuts have greatly affected unemployment across the country. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows about 7.8 million Americans are currently unemployed. The total unemployment rate is now at 4.6 percent.
