Caitlyn Jenner, a transgender woman who has been openly supporting Donald Trump, says that one of his executive orders has changed the gender marker on her passport. She told Tomi Lahren in an interview that this has left her unable to travel internationally or vote. The Supreme Court had allowed the administration to enforce the order, which forcibly changes gender markers on government-issued documents, including passports.
Jenner, who began identifying as a woman in 2015, spoke about her frustration, saying, “What do I do? This is a safety factor. I can’t travel internationally anymore. I can’t use my passport.” Her comments drew a sharp response from Ana Navarro, co-host of The View, who wrote on social media, “Boo-hoo. Cry me a f—ing river.”
Despite all this, Jenner said she still “loves” Trump and does not “blame him” for what has happened. According to The Daily Beast, she told Lahren, “I don’t blame President Trump. I love him, but for a lot of people, this is a huge issue.” She also said she tried to hand a letter to the president during a visit to Mar-a-Lago two months ago, passing it to the Secret Service, but has not heard back from him since.
Jenner’s support for Trump has put her in a tough spot that is hard to ignore
Jenner has publicly backed Trump’s re-election even as his administration has taken a firm stance against recognising LGBTQ identities. Trump’s presidency has seen a number of sweeping policy decisions in recent months, including stalled nuclear negotiations with Iran, showing just how active his administration has been on multiple fronts.
Her complaints have been met with little sympathy from many critics, who see her position as contradictory. One Instagram user summed up the reaction with the comment, “I didn’t think the leopards would eat MY face”, a well-known phrase used when someone is hurt by the very thing they supported.
On the voting issue, Jenner said, “Even to vote, now, you need proper identification, and I don’t have that.” She also said she believes the policy was not carefully planned, adding, “I just think it was just not thought out well.” These comments suggest she is frustrated with how the order was carried out, even though she continues to support Trump himself.
Jenner said she is still trying to figure out what her next steps are. “I’m trying to figure out at this point what to do,” she said. She has not announced any change in her political stance, and there is no indication she plans to withdraw her support for Trump or his administration.
The situation has put Jenner in a difficult and very public position. She is dealing with real consequences from a policy put in place by the person she campaigned for, while still standing by him. Many in the LGBTQ community and beyond have pointed out this contradiction openly. Meanwhile, Trump’s administration has also been making changes in other areas of government, such as appointing a new CDC director nominee after two previous attempts to fill the role.
It is not yet clear how things will move forward for Jenner, or whether Trump will respond to the letter she passed along through the Secret Service. For now, she says she is stuck without valid travel documents and without the identification she needs to vote, both of which are direct results of the executive order she has not spoken out against.
