The U.S. Department of Justice recently replied to Pop Base on X to talk about the Epstein files. The pop culture account has over 2.4 million followers and posted a letter that Jeffrey Epstein supposedly wrote about President Donald Trump. Instead of making an official statement, the DOJ decided to respond with a tweet.
According to The Daily Dot, Pop Base and several other social media accounts circulated what they claimed was a letter from Jeffrey Epstein addressed to Larry Nassar, another convicted sex offender. The alleged letter included a shocking line suggesting that Donald Trump “shares their love of young nubile girls.”
Not long after the post gained traction, the U.S. Department of Justice stepped into the conversation to shut it down. Responding directly in Pop Base’s replies, the DOJ said the letter was fake. According to the department, the FBI confirmed that the document was not authentic. Officials also stated that the jail where the letter was supposedly received had flagged it at the time and reported it to the FBI.
The government’s social media strategy is raising eyebrows
The Justice Department explained that the handwriting doesn’t match Epstein’s. They also pointed out that the letter was postmarked three days after Epstein died in 2019. The DOJ made sure to call it “fake” multiple times and added that just because something comes from the Justice Department doesn’t automatically make it true.
That last comment gave critics plenty to work with. Many people questioned why the DOJ was using social media this way instead of making a proper official statement. Some pointed out that the FBI previously said these files didn’t exist. Critics have been vocal about how the DOJ handles sensitive information involving high-profile figures.
Comedian Tony Posnanski said the DOJ had five years to investigate this but did nothing. He questioned why they suddenly did two hours of research just to respond to Pop Base on Twitter. “Clarifying this to POPBASE and not the American people is INSANE,” another person wrote.
People weren’t really arguing about whether the letter was real or fake. They were more shocked that the U.S. Justice Department was replying to a pop culture account on social media about something this serious. One person said everyone on the government social media team needs to be fired for how embarrassing this is. This isn’t the first time the Trump administration’s communication approach has raised questions.
The DOJ’s tweet doesn’t seem to be making Americans feel proud of their government. Many are calling the whole situation embarrassing and unprofessional for a major government department.
