Donald Trump’s endorsement secures a runoff spot for Clay Fuller, but the real test of his Georgia influence is still looming

Republican Clay Fuller, a district attorney for the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit, has officially secured a spot in the upcoming runoff election to replace Marjorie Taylor Greene, according to Decision Desk HQ, as per The Hill. This is a big win for Fuller, who had President Trump’s endorsement going into the special election, which had to take place as Greene had resigned from her position at the start of the year.

The race for Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, located in the state’s northwest corner, saw more than a dozen candidates vying for the open seat. What made this primary particularly interesting is that all candidates, regardless of their party affiliation, ran on a single ballot. To avoid a runoff election on April 7, one candidate needed to clinch at least half of the vote outright. Fuller didn’t quite hit that mark, but he did enough to make it to the next round.

President Trump threw his weight behind Fuller last month: “As your next Congressman, Clay will fight tirelessly to Grow the Economy, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Promote MADE IN THE U.S.A., Unleash American Energy DOMINANCE, Keep our Border SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Safeguard our Elections, Champion School Choice, and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment.” He also made a personal appearance, campaigning alongside Fuller and other Republican hopefuls.

Interestingly, Marjorie Taylor Greene herself opted not to endorse any specific candidate in the primary

Still, Greene’s presence loomed large over the entire race. Many candidates on the campaign trail either tried to align themselves with her firebrand Republican style or, conversely, contrasted themselves against it.

Fuller faced some stiff competition, particularly from former state Senator Colton Moore. Moore really leaned into his image, styling himself as “Trump’s #1 Defender for Georgia’s 14th Congressional District.” This primary was widely seen as a crucial test of just how powerful President Trump’s endorsement truly is. While the president often acts as a kingmaker in GOP primaries, Georgia Republicans have, at times, gone against his preferred picks in the past.

We’ve seen a mixed bag in Georgia when it comes to presidential endorsements. Back in 2022, President Trump’s choice for Senate, former football star Herschel Walker, successfully won his GOP primary. However, that same cycle saw Trump’s picks for governor, attorney general, and secretary of state all lose out to the Republican incumbents.

Looking ahead to the runoff, Republicans are definitely the heavy favorites to secure the seat next month. President Trump won Greene’s district in 2024 by nearly 37 points, which is a massive margin. A victory for Republicans in April is going to be incredibly important for maintaining their already narrow GOP House majority. With such a slim lead, the party can only afford one defection on legislation if all lawmakers are present and voting. Every seat really counts right now.
