Billionaire Elon Musk just dropped a staggering $10 million check into the Kentucky Senate race, signaling his willingness to pour massive resources into key Republican campaigns. That incredible contribution landed in the super PAC supporting Republican candidate Nate Morris, Fight for Kentucky, making it Musk’s largest donation ever to a single Senate candidate, as per The Hill.
This move clearly signals that Musk is ready to open his enormous checkbook for the upcoming midterms. While $10 million is an absolutely wild amount of money for a Senate race, you have to remember that the world’s richest person also previously donated at least $250 million to President Trump’s 2024 campaign.
So, who is Nate Morris? He’s a 45-year-old political outsider who is running to replace the retiring Senator Mitch McConnell. Morris initially declared his candidacy back in June on Donald Trump Jr.’s podcast. He’s leaning heavily on his business background and outsider status, promising voters he’d “finally give this seat back to the people” if he wins.
Morris is certainly not lacking in business credentials, which probably appeals to Musk’s own background
Morris isn’t just running against Democrats; he’s taking direct aim at his own party rivals, including Rep. Andy Barr and Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, slamming them as “McConnell-ites.” It definitely shows he’s ready for a real fight against the establishment wing of the GOP, making the entire contest a referendum on the current Senate leader. “This race is going to be very, very simple,” Morris said. “It’s a referendum on Mitch McConnell’s record. It’s a referendum on Mitch McConnell’s legacy.”
Morris graduated from George Washington University and went on to found the waste management company Rubicon Technologies. He’s currently the CEO of Morris Industries, a major holding company. Morris has already invested heavily in his own campaign, too. He loaned his committee, Morris for Senate, more than $3 million through the third quarter of last year and also pulled in over $1 million from other contributors.
Musk’s decision to back Morris with such a giant check confirms he’s back in the political game with immense force, despite a rocky history with the current administration. You might remember that Musk briefly ran the Department of Government Efficiency for about four months last year, but the two had a public falling-out, partly over the tax and budget legislation President Trump signed in July.
However, it seems like Musk has patched things up significantly with the White House. He and President Trump sat together at the funeral for conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Musk also attended a huge black-tie dinner at the White House honoring Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Musk has been getting very comfortable in D.C. lately, telling Republican operatives he plans to open up his enormous checkbook for the midterms. He also reportedly had dinner with Vice President Vance and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles in November. Considering he also made sizable donations to the GOP’s House and Senate campaign efforts late last year, this $10 million check is just the latest, and loudest, confirmation of his immense political influence.
