On her last day serving in Congress, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene publicly challenged President Trump, demanding that his administration immediately pivot away from the situation in Venezuela and focus entirely on domestic American policy, as per The Hill. This is a pretty stunning move, especially considering the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the US role in the South American country following the capture of its leadership.
Greene, who represents Georgia, didn’t mince words about where the president’s priorities should lie. She expressed hope that everyday Americans will start speaking up and demanding this shift as well. “I really hope to see the American people push back and say, ‘Let’s focus on the United States of America, Mr. President,’ because that’s what the American people deserve,” Greene said directly.
While she did acknowledge that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is a “bad guy,” Greene made it clear that running Venezuela is not the job of the US administration. She insists that the executive branch needs to be concentrating on lowering health care costs and tackling the massive national debt. “I would like to see a continued focus on domestic policy that helps the American people,” she stated. “That’s the country that they are supposed to be running.”
Trump has his eyes set on Venezuela when domestic policies require the most attention
The political drama is heating up because the short-term role the US intends to play in Venezuela remains incredibly vague, even days after Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured. President Trump himself laid out a bold vision that’s sure to raise some eyebrows globally. The president stated that his administration plans to “run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition.”
Even more significantly, he noted that American oil companies are going to take control of Venezuela’s vast petroleum reserves. For context, Venezuela sits on the largest oil reserves in the world. President Trump explained the necessity of this direct involvement, saying, “We don’t want to be involved with having somebody else get in, and we have the same situation that we had for the last long period of years.”
However, the administration’s messaging seems to be a little mixed regarding the scope of that takeover. Secretary of State Marco Rubio deflected questions about the US running day-to-day operations in the country just a day later. Rubio’s immediate focus is far more practical, stating that the administration is concentrating on halting the flow of drugs, gangs, and sanctioned oil coming out of Venezuela.
It’s clear that Representative Greene’s final political message is an urgent call for the president to focus his energy back home. While the geopolitical situation is certainly important, she’s making a strong case that the administration’s primary responsibility is to the American people and the challenges they face every single day.
