Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shared that she never planned to rip up President Donald Trump’s 2020 State of the Union speech. The moment became one of the most famous images from her time as Speaker of the House.
Pelosi told Jonathan Karl that her biggest moments with the president just happened without planning. She said tearing up the speech was not something she thought about before going to the event. “People like the tearing up of the speech. I didn’t intend to go to the speech to tear it up. I just, the first part of it, I tore a page because he was lying,” she said.
Then she tore the next page, and the one after that. She said the whole speech was full of lies, so she decided to tear up all of it. The paper was thick and strong, so she had to rip it several times to finish the job. She said her staff probably thought they were in serious trouble when she did it. “I had no intention of doing that. I thought my staff was going to die,” Pelosi explained, according to Fox News.
Pelosi gets more requests to sign the finger-pointing photo than anything else
Pelosi also talked about another famous moment from a 2019 meeting with Trump and his cabinet. In that photo, she is pointing her finger at the president. She told Karl that when she left that meeting, she had reached her limit with Trump. She said all roads lead to Putin when it comes to him.
The White House released the photo and called her crazy, but Pelosi said they actually did her a favor by sharing it. Trump has continued making bold statements on various issues, including his recent strong message to ISIS.
Fox News Digital asked the White House for a response but has not received one yet. Pelosi announced in November that she would not run for re-election after her current term ends.
Karl asked her what she wants people to remember about her career. Pelosi said she is most proud of the Affordable Care Act. She thinks it made a huge difference for working families and their health and money situations.
She said the fight over healthcare will continue because Republicans do not share the same values. The Trump administration has also proposed changes to policies affecting endangered species protections.
If she could be remembered for just one thing, she wants it to be the Affordable Care Act.
