House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, a top Republican representing Wisconsin, is calling for the immediate deportation and revocation of citizenship for all individuals of Somali ancestry found to be connected to the massive fraud scandal unfolding in Minnesota, as per The Hill. The lawmaker stated he wants to strip naturalized citizens of their status so they can also be removed from the country, indicating he’s ready to pass new legislation to make this possible.
Emmer made it clear on X that he believes those who committed fraud against American taxpayers must be sent away. “I have three words regarding Somalis who have committed fraud against American taxpayers: Send them home,” the No. 3 House Republican wrote. “If they’re here illegally, deport them immediately; if they’re naturalized citizens, revoke their citizenship and deport them quickly thereafter. If we need to change the law to do that, I will.”
It seems the political heat is really ramping up because the scale of this fraud investigation is absolutely staggering. The Department of Homeland Security recently confirmed that federal authorities were already on the ground in Minnesota conducting a “massive investigation on childcare and other rampant fraud.”
It looks like this scandal is going to continue dominating the headlines as the federal investigation deepens and the political debate over deportation and citizenship revocation heats up
Federal prosecutors have been busy, announcing earlier this month that they are significantly broadening their investigation into suspicious activity across the North Star State. They recently charged an additional six people, bringing the total number of individuals charged in connection with these schemes up to 92.
Officials are currently scrutinizing suspicious billing practices across 14 different Medicaid-funded programs. They had previously investigated fraud linked to three state-run safety net programs. A preliminary assessment cited by prosecutors suggests that more than half of the stunning $18 billion in taxpayer funding spent on these programs may have been stolen.
In fact, federal prosecutors have noted that one of the schemes, which involves 78 of the charged individuals, is now considered the largest pandemic relief fraud case in the entire country. You can see why lawmakers like Emmer are reacting so forcefully to the activity. The vast majority of the people previously charged, specifically 84 of the 92, are reportedly of Somali ancestry.
The situation is definitely raising some uncomfortable questions locally. Some officials in Minnesota have expressed concern about the very narrow targeting of the Somali community. This is especially sensitive since the administration of President Trump has already highlighted the fraud scandal as part of its ongoing crackdown on immigration and community assimilation. The President also attacked Rep. Ilhan Omar, who emigrated from Somalia.
Emmer’s final comments show he views this widespread theft as a failure to integrate. He added that the country simply “will not tolerate those who take advantage of our charity and refuse to assimilate into our culture.”
