President Trump posted an expletive-laden Easter morning message on his social media account in which he threatened more missile strikes against Iran and unexpectedly wrote “Praise be to Allah.” The post escalated an already tense situation by setting a specific deadline for military action if Iran does not comply with his demands regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
The incident came to light through LADBible, which reported the full contents of the post. Trump wrote that Tuesday, April 7, would be “Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran,” adding “There will be nothing like it!!!” He followed that with a direct command: “Open the F—in’ Strait, you crazy b—–ds, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah. President DONALD J. TRUMP.” Later that same Sunday, Trump extended his original deadline by 24 hours, posting that the new cutoff would be Tuesday at 8:00 PM ET.
The US is currently at war with Iran, and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has significant global repercussions. About 20 percent of the world’s supply of oil and natural gas flows through the waterway, and its closure has already driven up oil prices worldwide, feeding into broader price increases for goods and services. Trump’s previous attempts to de-escalate the conflict and undo economic damage from the closure appear to have fallen short.
This is at least the second time Trump has set a deadline Iran has not met
Trump had previously issued a similar warning, giving Iran ten days to “MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT,” with that message concluding: “Time is running out – 48 hours before all Hell will reign (sic) down on them. Glory be to GOD!” The president has made similar threats before, only to seemingly back down after Iran countered with threats of its own. Iranian officials previously indicated they would strike targets across the Gulf, including desalination plants that supply water to several countries in the region.
Trump has consistently claimed the US is close to achieving its “core strategic objectives” in the conflict, stating that Iran’s missile supplies have been “decimated” and that the US would strike the country “extremely hard” over the coming weeks. He has framed this as bombing Iran into the “Stone Age” if they refuse a deal, specifically targeting energy infrastructure. During a separate speech, Trump also renamed the Strait of Hormuz the “Strait of Trump” while lamenting not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. The bipartisan scrutiny facing Pete Hegseth over the Iran war has added further pressure on the administration’s handling of the conflict.
Despite Trump’s claims of being close to a deal, Iranian officials have contradicted his assertions of ongoing negotiations. They have maintained they will only reopen the Strait when a portion of transit tolls is used to compensate for damage caused by the war. Indirect negotiations have reportedly taken place over the last ten days, with Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey acting as intermediaries, but those efforts have not produced significant progress.
Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf responded directly to Trump’s Easter message on X, writing that Trump’s “reckless moves are dragging the United States into a living HELL for every single family.” Ghalibaf accused Trump of “following Netanyahu’s commands” and called for respecting the rights of the Iranian people. The US has reportedly been preparing for a “major escalation” in the region, though officials have stressed the preparations do not include a total invasion.
Trump himself has mentioned considering “blowing everything up and taking over the oil” if Iran did not make a deal, while also claiming at one point that there was a “good chance” of securing an agreement. The broader economic fallout from the US-Israel-Iran conflict has already reached well beyond the immediate region.
