President Trump’s approval rating has dipped to a new all-time low, according to a recent survey, and support for his administration’s war efforts against Iran is also seeing a significant decline. This isn’t great news for the president, especially with ongoing international tensions and economic pressures.
The fresh University of Massachusetts Amherst poll, as reported by The Hill, found that just 33 percent of respondents approved of the president’s job performance. On the flip side, a hefty 62 percent disapproved of his work in office, with more than half of those, 53 percent, expressing “strong” disapproval.
It seems the president’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement is also feeling the pinch. Exactly 33 percent of those polled said they associated themselves with the movement, either “somewhat” or “very much.” While 77 percent of Republicans still identify with it, only 4 percent of Democrats do. This shows a pretty stark partisan divide, which isn’t entirely surprising, but the overall number is lower than what we’ve seen before.
Things are not looking too bright for President Trump heading into the midterms later this year
Comparing this to previous surveys, President Trump’s approval rating was at 38 percent last July and 44 percent last April in the same Amherst survey. Other polls released last week also placed his job approval rating around 38 percent, with another indicating 41 percent. So, this latest 33 percent is definitely a notable drop.
When it comes to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, public sentiment is even less favorable. Only 29 percent of respondents in the Amherst poll supported President Trump’s handling of strikes against Iran. A substantial 63 percent disapproved of his approach to this critical issue.
The U.S. and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran at the end of February, which reportedly killed several top leaders. President Trump has stated that these strikes have effectively wiped out Iran’s navy. However, the conflict has now dragged on for over a month, with both sides threatening to escalate attacks. The U.S. currently has more than 50,000 troops stationed in the region, and the president hasn’t ruled out a ground strike in Iran.
Meanwhile, Iran has been busy with counterstrikes, targeting U.S. bases and energy production sites in Persian Gulf states. They’ve also effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, which is a major oil trading corridor, and that’s a big deal for global energy markets.
These military operations are having a real impact on our wallets, driving up the price of all sorts of goods. We’re talking about oil, gas, fertilizer, flights, helium, and even mortgage rates. For example, international benchmark Brent crude oil was trading at $108 Monday afternoon, after closing at nearly $113 last Friday. West Texas Intermediate crude oil was around $104. And if you’ve been to the pump lately, you’ve probably noticed U.S. gas prices climbing, averaging $3.99 per gallon lately.
Beyond the conflict, the new poll also highlighted weak job performance from President Trump on the issue of inflation. Only 24 percent thought he was doing a good job on inflation, while a significant 71 percent felt he did “not too well” or “not well at all.”
The University of Massachusetts Amherst survey was conducted from March 20 to March 25, including 1,000 respondents, and has a margin of error of approximately 3.5 percentage points.
