A woman says she needs 4 naps a day even after a full night’s sleep, then a 24-hour medical test finally gave her an answer

A woman who needs multiple naps every day, even after a full night’s sleep, revealed she was diagnosed with idiopathic hypersomnia following a 24-hour medical sleep test. TikTok creator Emily, known as @emilytatouille, documented the test in a video that racked up one million views and hundreds of comments.

As reported by The Daily Dot, Emily’s problem isn’t falling asleep but staying awake. She said she typically takes around four naps a day, which has led people around her to suggest she sleeps too much and just needs to get up.

For the test, Emily was placed in a hotel room with wires attached to various parts of her face. She had forms to fill out, was monitored by a camera throughout, and had to stay awake between a series of scheduled naps.

The naps were not nearly as relaxing as she expected

Each nap opportunity lasted about 15 to 20 minutes, and doctors measured how long it took her to fall asleep. After her first nap, Emily said she had fallen asleep in just four minutes and was woken up after 15 minutes of sleep.

Emily initially thought the test would be a relaxing experience, but it turned out differently. “I thought this would be fun. I thought this would be a nice nap. Turns out it’s not, because as soon as you fall asleep, they wake you up,” she explained in her video.

After each nap, Emily had to stay awake until her next scheduled session. She was given something to eat and drink before her second nap, and she said she fell asleep in four minutes again, sleeping for around 15 to 20 minutes.

By the third nap, it took her around 15 to 20 minutes to fall asleep. Emily said the doctor told her she was doing well and that the test would help them work toward a diagnosis.

After another meal and her fourth nap, Emily looked visibly exhausted and admitted the test was much harder than she had anticipated. One commenter who had undergone the same test wrote, “I had to do this test so I FEEL your pain. I was diagnosed with hypersomnia.”

After nearly 24 hours in the hotel room, Emily completed her fifth and final nap session. In a follow-up TikTok video, she revealed her diagnosis of idiopathic hypersomnia, mainly because she did not reach REM sleep during any of her naps in the test.

Many commenters shared their own sleep diagnoses or experiences, with one wondering whether she might have narcolepsy. “Omg. Do I have narcolepsy?!? I got to bed and get 7-8 hours sleep. I can barely function,” she wrote. Her video spread online amid another viral TikTok in which a Georgia patient confronted her doctor after a physical exam.

Another commenter described the opposite problem, writing, “I have the opposite issue where I don’t nap at all, can easily stay up until 3 AM and wake up at 6:00 AM wide awake and still not tired the following day.”
