A 75-year-old military veteran is now in a coma after a DoorDash driver punched him. The incident happened when Lloyd Poole asked the driver to slow down in his Michigan neighborhood. Poole walked out of his driveway on December 28 in Wixom to talk to the driver about speeding. What happened next has left his family shocked and worried.
According to People, the driver, 40-year-old Ryan Turner, got out and punched Poole on the side of his head. Poote fell to the ground and never got back up. Turner then got back in his car and drove away, leaving the elderly man lying unconscious on the road.
Poole’s daughter, Jen Shaw, said her father suffered a black eye and needed emergency brain surgery. Doctors had to remove part of his skull during the operation. Since then, Poole has not woken up from his coma.
The veteran’s condition remains critical with no signs of recovery
Shaw explained that her father cannot talk or respond to anything. He remains unconscious in the hospital, and doctors don’t know when or if he will wake up. The family is taking turns staying by his bedside, hoping for any sign of improvement.
Police arrived at the scene around 5:21 p.m. after receiving reports of a man lying unconscious in the street. They initially thought it might be a road rage incident. Turner later went to the police station and admitted what happened. Similar unexpected confrontations have led to serious medical emergencies in recent incidents across the country.
According to police reports, Turner told officers that Poole confronted him about driving too fast through the neighborhood. Turner claimed he felt threatened and that’s why he punched the 75-year-old man. He also admitted to leaving the scene after Poole fell and hit his head on the road.
Turner was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. He posted a $35,000 bond on January 1 and was released from Oakland County Jail. DoorDash responded by permanently banning Turner from their platform and called the incident “absolutely appalling and unacceptable.” In other cases, what seemed like minor incidents have resulted in unexpected hospital visits requiring urgent medical care.
The company said they have zero tolerance for violence and are working with police to help with the investigation. Meanwhile, Poole’s family continues their hospital vigil, deeply worried about his uncertain future. Shaw admitted they’re very concerned because brain injuries are unpredictable, and they simply don’t know what will happen next.
