A youth softball coach in Georgia has been removed from her position with Fury Platinum Softball and is reportedly facing criminal charges after allegedly attacking opposing coaches during an 8U tournament in Dalton, Georgia. The incident, which unfolded during a postgame handshake line, quickly went viral after being captured on video.
Meredith Haskew Grant, who was coaching the GA Fury Platinum Harris team, is at the center of this controversy. She was reportedly in her second or third year with the team, and her daughter is on the roster. While the exact trigger for the altercation remains unclear, reports suggest some “chirping back and forth” between rival teams preceded the physical confrontation.
According to BroBible, the disturbing footage of the incident, originally recorded on the GameChanger app, found its way to Instagram. Popular social media personality Corey Harper, known as “The Tattooed Ump,” shared the clip, which quickly garnered widespread attention. Harper reportedly knew Haskew Grant growing up.
Not the kind of energy you expect at 8U
The video shows GA Fury Platinum Harris trailing 14-7 in the top of the fifth inning. What appears to be a postgame handshake line had formed around the pitcher’s mound, with coaches and players from both teams gathered together. It looks like the game might have concluded early due to a mercy rule or a limited number of innings. As the teams prepared to exchange “good games,” the situation took a wild turn.
The video clearly shows a woman, identified as Meredith Haskew Grant, charging at a rival coach in a fit of rage. She tackles one of them to the ground, prompting a nearby parent to yell, “Girls, get in the dugout!” The chaos didn’t stop there; multiple punches appear to have been thrown during the ugly outburst. Lauren Stithem, who serves as a head coach for The Wreckers, North Georgia’s first-ever girls fastpitch softball program, offered her account of the events.
Stithem explained that her team has consistently beaten Haskew Grant’s team since they were playing 6U recreational softball, suggesting a history of rivalry. She characterized Haskew Grant as “salty every time we play them.” Stithem stated that Haskew Grant was “running her mouth to my coaches on the dugout while coaching 1B,” admitting that her coaches were “giving it back to her.”Stithem emphasized that the physical attack during the handshake was not provoked by anything said at that exact moment.
According to Stithem, Haskew Grant “couldn’t control herself while shaking hands and she put hands on my male assistant coach and then my female and then me.” Stithem also claimed that Haskew Grant “will be charged with assault and 23 acts of child endangerment,” though these specific charges have not yet been independently confirmed. Frankly, it’s pretty awful to see adults behave this way at a youth sporting event. There’s just no logical reason for anyone to get that upset over a game played by 8-year-olds.
Coaches should always look out for their players, much like how some NBA coaches have advocated for fewer games to protect player health, but this kind of behavior is clearly the opposite of that. Adults are supposed to set an example, and this kind of behavior is completely out of line. A spokesperson for Fury Platinum Fastpitch has confirmed that Meredith Haskew Grant is no longer associated with the organization. She has been removed from her coaching role following the incident.
She has been removed from her coaching role following the attack, and now she’ll be facing the consequences of her actions.
