NFL players, who have a huge influence on society, have always been outspoken about political and social matters. Among these players is Asante Samuel, who has won two Super Bowls and has been a critic of the MAGA campaign of Donald Trump. Recently, he took a dig at Trump supporters, indirectly referring to them as blind people who would believe the unbelievable things just because the president says it.
According to the Daily Mail, Asante Samuel posted a cryptic message on social media for NFL fans who closely follow Trump, claiming that if Trump had made a false announcement about an off-season NFL match, his followers might have gone to an empty stadium to watch it. Samuels has been a vocal critic of Trump’s MAGA campaign since 2024. He even called Trump’s voters out for the social disintegration of the US.
In a tweet, he sarcastically wrote, “If Trump told you there was a NFL game tomorrow you would believe it.” He added laughing emojis to clarify the sarcasm in the cryptic post, and indirectly questioned the thinking of Trump’s followers, who believe everything he says. In another tweet, quoting this one, he also wrote, “Y’all voted for this mess.” showing more of his frustration he still has for the MAGA campaign.
Donald Trump and NFL players share a long-standing history of feuds
Samuels might have made these pinchy remarks on Trump’s supporters, but beneath the surface, there has been a long struggle between Trump and the NFL. Donald Trump, who recently welcomed Iran to play in the World Cup, wasn’t very welcoming and asked the NFL to fire players who were showing solidarity with George Floyd by kneeling during the national anthem. Since then, it looks like the athletes have shown less support for the president.
In response to his statement, NFL players called him out, especially former Seahawks player Marshawn Lynch, who was seen wearing the shirt, which read as, “Everybody vs Trump”. However, many have supported him as well, like DE Nick Bos, who wore a “Make America Great Again” hat post-game and former players like Antonio Brown, who backed the president during his 2024 election campaign.
Players like Samuel seem to criticise him for his conduct, and now they are calling out their supporters for their blind belief. While his statement hasn’t sparked a widespread debate, it seems Samuel and the president still stand at opposite ends.
