Fifa appears to rule out moving Iran’s World Cup matches, but growing safety fears are still looming

Fifa has indicated it does not plan to relocate Iran’s World Cup matches from the United States, despite rising safety concerns tied to ongoing geopolitical tensions. As reported by BBC Sport, the governing body said it expects all nations to compete according to the existing schedule.

The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. Fifa’s statement follows speculation that Iran’s fixtures could be moved after concerns were raised by officials within the country’s football federation.

Iran’s football federation president Mehdi Taj previously said discussions had taken place about relocating matches. He cited security concerns and referenced statements attributed to President Trump regarding the safety of Iran’s national team.

Safety concerns continue to hang over tournament plans

The situation is unfolding amid ongoing US and Israeli strikes involving Iran, creating uncertainty around international travel and participation. The concerns come amid Iranian team safety concerns that have already put pressure on tournament planning.

President Trump has offered mixed public statements about Iran’s participation. He previously said he did not care whether Iran competed, but later suggested it might not be appropriate for safety reasons while still stating the country is welcome.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino said Trump had communicated that Iran would be allowed to take part. The conflicting signals have added uncertainty as preparations for the tournament continue.

Iran’s Minister of Sports and Youth Ahmad Donyamali said conditions are not suitable for participation under current circumstances. Iranian officials have emphasized that player safety remains the priority as tensions persist.

Iran is scheduled to play New Zealand on June 16 and Belgium on June 21 in Los Angeles, before facing Egypt on June 27 in Seattle. The schedule remains in place amid IRGC attack warnings that have added to broader security concerns.

Iran has qualified for its fourth consecutive World Cup and has previously continued participation despite geopolitical pressure. Fifa has not indicated any plans to alter the schedule, leaving teams and organizers to prepare under existing arrangements.
