Former WWE champion Alberto Del Rio, whose real name is Alberto Rodríguez (also known to fans as Alberto El Patrón), has reportedly been arrested in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, after his wife made a 911 call alleging physical assault. Local reports claim that his wife suffered injuries to her face and arms during the alleged incident.
When members of the State Civil Guard arrived at the residential scene, they found the alleged victim with visible injuries, which led them to swiftly detain the former WWE star. Authorities found the alleged assault was taking place when they arrived, allowing them to apprehend him at the scene. The case is now under investigation by the San Luis Potosí State Attorney General’s Office, which is responsible for determining potential criminal liability.
According to Daily Mail, authorities have not yet disclosed Rodriguez’s legal status or whether formal charges will be filed, and it remains unclear if he will stay in custody or face proceedings while released. This is not Rodriguez’s first run-in with the law, either. Back in May 2020, he was arrested following accusations of beating and raping a woman and even threatening her child.
This isn’t the first time he’s been in serious trouble
He was booked into the Bexar County jail, facing charges of sexual assault and assault causing bodily harm, and later indicted on aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault charges. While his trial saw multiple delays, those charges were ultimately dropped in December 2021. This situation mirrors other high-profile incidents where athletes face serious allegations, such as the recent case of an NFL player who was accused of being violent and threatening to kill his partner.
Rodriguez, originally signed with the WWE in 2009, making his main roster debut the following year. He quickly made a name for himself, capturing two Championships during his time with the promotion. In 2011, he achieved a rare feat, becoming the only professional wrestler to win both the Royal Rumble and the Money in the Bank ladder match in the same calendar year. He comes from a legendary wrestling family, as the son of Dos Caras and nephew of Mil Máscaras.
He left WWE in 2014, returning for a second stint from 2015 to 2016, and has also competed for other notable companies like Impact Wrestling, World Wrestling Council, Ring of Honor, and Lucha Underground. Rodriguez has been one of the most internationally recognized Mexican figures in professional wrestling, starting his career in Mexico under the name Dos Caras Jr.
Beyond the squared circle, Rodriguez also tried his hand at mixed martial arts, fighting under the Combate Americas promotion and accumulating a 9-6 record. He even ventured into reality television, appearing as a contestant on “La Granja VIP,” where he made it to the later stages before being eliminated. More recently, he participated in a celebrity boxing event, Ring Royale, where he was defeated by influencer Chuy Almada.
Despite his international success, Del Rio’s recent years have been surrounded by controversy. During his latest stint in AAA, the wrestler was involved in multiple incidents, including altercations with fellow wrestlers and disruptive behavior in television appearances. One of the most talked-about episodes occurred during a morning show appearance, where he reportedly caused damage to the set. He was also involved in aggressive confrontations during press events ahead of matches, drawing criticism within the wrestling industry.
This latest allegation of domestic violence could have significant consequences for both his reputation and his future in the sports entertainment industry.
