‘I felt mercy for him’: Prochazka saw Ulberg’s knee go and eased up, and that decision just cost him the title for the third time

Carlos Ulberg became the UFC light heavyweight champion at UFC 327 in Miami on April 11, 2026, stopping Jiri Prochazka with a first-round knockout at the 3:45 mark of the opening round. As covered by ESPN, the finish came via a left hook to the chin that ended a bout defined by injury, hesitation, and a single decisive moment.

Ulberg appeared to suffer a serious right knee injury almost immediately after the opening bell, his knee buckling awkwardly when he planted his foot. Despite the setback, he kept his composure and continued to pressure Prochazka, later saying he never counted himself out and knew he only needed one opening to change the outcome of the fight.

The critical sequence unfolded when Prochazka, recognizing the injury, began pointing at the ground and visibly eased off rather than pressing to finish. The hesitation gave Ulberg the window he needed. Prochazka afterward described the decision as one of the biggest lessons of his life, acknowledging that the fight was in his hands and that he made a choice he will not soon forget.

Prochazka’s moment of mercy turned a fight he appeared to be winning into the third title loss of his career

The defeat extends a difficult run for Prochazka in championship bouts. He has now gone 1-3 across his four most recent title appearances, including two prior losses to Alex Pereira. Pereira vacated the light heavyweight belt to move up to heavyweight, where he is preparing to challenge for the interim title at UFC Freedom 250, scheduled for June 14 at the White House. That date coincides with Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. For Ulberg, the victory extends his winning streak to 10 consecutive fights and brings his overall record to 15-1-0.

Trump attended UFC 327 at the Kaseya Center, arriving alongside UFC president Dana White and family members, with Kid Rock playing over the arena speakers as they entered. He was seated cageside with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and U.S. ambassador to India Sergio Gor. Trump’s presence at the card came amid an otherwise busy weekend for the administration, with separate diplomatic talks over Iran dominating news coverage at the same time.

The rest of the card delivered. In a heavyweight bout that generated significant crowd energy, Josh Hokit defeated Curtis Blaydes by unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring it 29-28. The two combined for 351 significant strikes across 15 minutes, drawing loud chants from the crowd during the fight.

Following the result, Dana White announced that Hokit would face Derrick Lewis on the upcoming White House card, an addition White said came directly from a conversation with the President, who questioned why Lewis was not already booked. The UFC Freedom 250 card is shaping up against the backdrop of ongoing economic pressure tied to the Iran conflict, which has drawn scrutiny of Trump’s recent public appearances and priorities.

Earlier on the card, Paulo Costa stopped Azamat Murzakanov in the third round, ending an undefeated run from a fighter who had previously finished five of his first seven UFC opponents. Murzakanov stepped to the apron after the bout to shake hands with the President, who offered him personal praise for his performance.
