Former NBA enforcer Kenyon Martin didn’t hold back, publicly confronting a staff member of the Gil’s Arena podcast for creating a video that mocked his speech impediment. According to New York Post, the intense moment unfolded live on the show, hosted by fellow NBA veteran Gilbert Arenas. Martin interrupted the conversation by calling out the employee known as “Suge” to meet him face-to-face on the set.
Martin then pulled out his smartphone and played the offending video aloud for everyone to hear. “Something recently was brought to my attention about someone who works here, someone we see daily. I brought this person into my home, had them around my wife and my kids, and treated them with nothing but respect.” Martin began.
He continued, framing the incident as a breach of trust. “This is a loyalty situation. I want people with their kids, teaching situation. When people tell you be careful who you bring into your inner circle, be careful who you bring into your home, this is this situation that I’m speaking of right now.” It’s a powerful statement about betrayal, emphasizing the trust he extended to someone who then disrespected him so deeply.
He really thought a random apology would fix this mess
After calling “Suge” to the set, Martin directly challenged him. “I need you to do some explaining to me, brother. Can you explain this video to me?” Martin stated. While the exact audio from the now-viral clip of the employee’s response is a bit unclear, it seems the staff member tried to explain that he had previously apologized for the video. Martin quickly shot that down, revealing the employee had tried to apologize “out the blue” while at Arenas’ home.
Martin explained he “blew you off because I didn’t know what you were talking about.” He only saw the video himself “two weeks ago” after someone sent it to him. This really highlights how these things can fester, especially when the victim isn’t even aware of the disrespect until much later.
Martin made it clear there was no room for an apology, as mocking personal struggles impacts mental health and overall well-being. This incident highlights the emotional strain on veterans, much like the physical toll discussed in the debate for fewer NBA games for player health. “That’s something that I have stated time and time again on this couch, sensitive subject, sensitive subject for me, right? I drew a line in the sand a long time ago with this,” he explained.
He was absolutely firm on his stance, stating, “There is no apology ever that as an adult that I would accept for this.” He added that if he had seen the video back when it was made, “we would’ve had this conversation” much sooner. The former All-Star explained his decision to confront the employee publicly was about maintaining “the same energy” since the disrespect was also public.
He then delivered a chilling final message to the employee: “Don’t ever be in my presence ever again is what I want.” It’s a harsh but understandable boundary to set when someone crosses such a personal line. Kenyon Martin went on to have a stellar 15-year career, earning an All-Star nod in 2004. He played for teams like the Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks, and Milwaukee Bucks before announcing his retirement in 2015.
It all started when he was the first overall pick in the 2000 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets.
