NCAA March Madness was at its peak this weekend with UConn getting a close win over Duke. But when the whole world was tuned in to watch the match, another debate began with NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley, who used the spotlight to comment on ongoing ICE-related issues. His comments were sharply echoed in the American media as nationwide tensions against Donald Trump’s policies mount, and these issues are also discussed in sports.
According to the Daily Mail, during a break in the play, Charles Barkley, who previously argued that modern kids are ‘dumber than rocks,’ took a moment to mention UConn star Alex Karaban, whose parents are both immigrants. Charles, through his example, took on the ICE issues happening in America. He declared that he loves Karaban as a player and as a very good kid, but there are a lot of worse things going on in the country against immigrants like him. He declared that the state is not making any distinction between good and bad immigrants and seems to be creating problems for honourable people.
His exact words were, “I want to be very careful with my words right now because this is a touchy subject for me. I love that kid and his family, but the way some of these other immigrants are getting treated in our country right now is a travesty and a disgrace. I think there’s a difference between amazing immigrants and criminal immigrants, and I think what’s gone on in our country and what we’re doing to some of these amazing immigrants is really unfortunate, and it’s really sad.” He also added, “Immigrants built this country, and we should admire them and respect them.”
Charles Barkley’s response was surprising after his previous support for the president amidst a previous media controversy
Even though Charles Barkley is seemingly going against Trump’s administration policies, it is surprising because he had previously offered his support to the President amid an ongoing controversy over players visiting the White House after their Olympic win. He showed his support for Trump, saying, “I want to make that clear. I respect the office. He’s the president of the United States… it doesn’t have to be a talking point.”
Now, he seems unhappy with things happening in America to the point that he is openly making statements. The former NBA player, through his comments, may have started a debate questioning the credibility of sports and the leagues, with events like immigrant persecution becoming the order of the day. He raised a question about whether this scheme of actions against immigrants will continue or end. But since he has made a bold statement on an already sensitive topic, it remains to be seen how the American audience will react.
