Former U.S. women’s national team star Megan Rapinoe is currently facing accusations of being a “hypocrite” as her silence on a critical issue draws sharp criticism. Many are slamming Rapinoe, who is one of the top scorers in U.S. soccer history, for not speaking out about the serious situation involving the Iranian women’s soccer team.
The Iranian team recently protested their national anthem during a women’s cup game held in Australia, a move that has put their safety at risk. Several players have since remained in Australia, fearing severe repercussions if they returned to Iran. It’s a terrifying situation, and the silence from figures like Rapinoe has become a major talking point.
According to The Spun, Piers Morgan didn’t hold back when reacting on X. He wrote, “The silence over this from Rapinoe, and so many supposed ‘feminists’ like her, is so telling, damning, and hypocritical. They’d rather campaign for biological men to wreck women’s sport than campaign for these heroic young sportswomen to help save their lives.”
You’d think Rapinoe would have something to say here
She previously went after the U.S. men’s hockey team for their behavior following the Winter Olympics, calling them out pretty harshly. Rapinoe had said, “The United States’ men’s hockey team in their utter moment of glory, childhood dreams come true, once-in-a-lifetime accomplishment, sensational ruined it for themselves because they allowed themselves to be totally co-opted by a clown. And now, you’re a clown. You look like a clown.”
The situation for the Iranian women’s national team is incredibly serious. There’s real fear that they could face severe punishment if they return to their home country. Mohammad Reza Shahbazi, a presenter on state television, made some chilling remarks in footage verified saying “traitors during wartime must be dealt with more severely.”
He continued, “Anyone who takes a step against the country under war conditions must be dealt with more severely. Like this matter of our women’s football team not singing the national anthem, and that photo that was published and so on, which I won’t get into. These people must be dealt with more severely.” It’s an alarming threat and underscores the danger these athletes are in, with Iran also firing back at Trump over his World Cup warning.
President Trump also weighed in on the situation, expressing significant concern for the Iranian women’s team. He urged Australia to protect the women, writing, “Australia is making a terrible humanitarian mistake by allowing the Iran National Woman’s Soccer team to be forced back to Iran, where they will most likely be killed. Don’t do it, Mr. Prime Minister, give ASYLUM. The U.S. will take them if you won’t. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
He later provided an update, stating, “I just spoke to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, of Australia, concerning the Iranian National Women’s Soccer Team. He’s on it! Five have already been taken care of, and the rest are on their way. Some, however, feel they must go back because they are worried about the safety of their families, including threats to those family members if they don’t return.”
The president concluded with, “In any event, the Prime Minister is doing a very good job having to do with this rather delicate situation. God bless Australia!”
