Mike Krzyzewski’s grandson was driving under the influence at night, but a fatal crash claimed the life of a teenaged boy on his ‘last perfect day’

The mother's message is truly heartbreaking.

Mike Krzyzewski is in the news lately, and it is for an incident involving his grandson. It was recently reported that the grandson of Duke’s legendary NCAA coach has been involved in an accident that fatally injured a boy who was on an electric bike. His intoxication test was positive, and he has been accused of striking the boy while he was drunk.

According to the New York Post, Joseph Savrino, the 26-year-old grandson of the legendary college coach, struck the boy on the electric bicycle when he was in Durham, North Carolina. The injured boy has now died, as reported by Wral. The victim is identified as Jack O Shea by his mother. He was 15 years old and was a part of his school’s basketball team and had played two matches the same day, but in the evening, he was struck by a vehicle and ended up dying in the hospital.

Jack’s mother shared the message on her Facebook saying, “It is with unfathomable sadness that [my husband] and I share that our perfect, smart, athletic, fearless and handsome baby boy, Jack, passed away yesterday, April 18th, at just 15 years old,” She added “He woke up and asked to go to confession at Immaculate Conception Church. He then played two baseball games with his high school team, where he did what he always did — showed up fully and excelled at first base. Later, he went on his usual afternoon bike ride with friends.”

Intoxication test returns positive following Savrino’s arrest

Joseph Savrino was tested immediately after the arrest, and the public recorded readings from his breathing test were 0.11, making it clear that he was driving while he was drunk, a strong case against him. He has now been charged with driving while intoxicated and endangering the lives of others on the road. Even though he has not pleaded guilty to the charges, things do not look so great for him, as his license has been suspended after the incident, and he has been bailed on a bond of 100K.

Joseph Savrino, in the initial investigation, confirmed that he drank earlier that night when he struck the boy.  And it is not just Joseph who has been charged with DWI, but his brother Michael was also involved in a road incident of violations while being drunk. Michael was sentenced to 12 years of probation. He was also charged with underage driving in 2022.

After Tiger Wood’s DUI, this is another one in the sports scene that is being widely discussed. Even though the accident’s investigations are ongoing, the public interest in this particular incident has increased as Mike Krzyzewski is being pulled into the news. The legendary coach has not given his statement regarding the incident, but it is yet to be seen whether the lawsuit is pursued in court by both parties or there will be a deal outside the court between them.
