American Gold-winning Olympian Alysa Liu has reportedly broken her silence on her fellow Olympian Eileen Gu for representing China in the Winter Olympics. Alysa, who has been making headlines lately, was asked about her opinion on the Gu’s representation of China, and she seemed supportive and indirectly criticised those who tried to label Eileen a traitor.
According to the Daily Mail, Liu responded to those who tried to paint Eileen as a traitor and labeled them as hypocrites, saying that there is nothing wrong with representing any country where the opportunity is available. She declared that this is sports, and an athlete should have the opportunity wherever it arises, whether in the same country one lives in or from anywhere else.
In an interview with The New York Times, she said, “I think people are hypocritical for shaming her for representing China,” Liu continued. “So in my head it’s a bit hypocritical, because her mom is an immigrant. Y’all would have told her to go back to China. Now that they’re back in China, you’re mad. And it’s sport, it doesn’t matter what country we represent. Sport is sport, and she has a love for competition; she has a love for the game. I think that’s all that matters. There’s no shame in going to where opportunity is.”
Eileen Gu faced backlash for training with American resources because she planned to represent China instead
Alysa Liu, who recently got herself into an odd situation with fans at the airport, has surely made her point, but people are criticizing Eileen for representing China after using resources from America. It looks like the authorities have found it odd that Eileen represented China instead of the USA after using American resources. She was reportedly paid $6.6 million, along with another athlete, by the Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau.
The American Vice President also shared his sharp opinion about her, saying, “I certainly think that someone who grew up in the United States of America, who benefited from our education system, from the freedoms and liberties that make this country a great place, I would hope they want to compete with the United States of America.”
Despite criticism and scrutiny from the American sports world, Alysa showed her support for Eileen. Even though a lot has been said about her, the athlete herself has not yet responded to the situation. This suggests that she wants to stay out of the headlines. But even after weeks of solid Olympic performance, the debate around her is still on.
