Soccer fans paid top dollar for premium 2026 FIFA World Cup tickets, but what they got instead feels like a rip off

Make sure to keep this in mind before buying your World Cup tickets.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 will take place this summer in the US, Mexico, and Canada, and with less than three months remaining, the World Cup craze is at its peak. People are buying tickets immediately since ticket sales went live. But there are multiple reports of people complaining that they are being treated unfairly after discovering that their seats are in less desirable locations than expected, and some say they were not clearly notified in advance.

According to Barstool Sports, FIFA first divided the tickets into four categories, with each corresponding to a range of sections at each stadium, per color-coded maps embedded in the ticketing portal and published online. But FIFA last week changed the ticket placement, with many fans receiving seats in less favorable spots, such as corners or behind a goal. Some of the Category 1 ticket holders are being placed in areas that were previously highlighted on the indicative maps as Category 2 zones.

FIFA’s ticket reshuffling has caused significant backlash among fans who had already bought tickets. Some fans even suspect that no seats in previously designated sections have actually been assigned to Category 1 buyers for at least some of the World Cup’s 104 games. The social media platform has been crowded with people commenting against this sudden reshuffling, with people calling FIFA the alleged offender, causing a stir among soccer fans around the globe.

FIFA issues a response to fan complaints amid ongoing ticket category controversy

FIFA has finally responded to the situation, but the statement is not being welcomed. They replied to the complaints of the category one classification, saying that the earlier issued schemes were tentative rather than being absolute. They insisted that the earlier issues layout was meant to provide guidance rather than be the exact seat location. It looks like FIFA is not apologizing or trying to find a solution; instead, it is doubling down on its stance taken earlier.

As per GOAL, a FIFA spokesperson said, “During the various sales phases preceding the current Last Minute Sales Phase, FIFA published indicative category maps to help fans understand where their seats could be located within a stadium. These maps were designed to provide guidance rather than the exact seat layout, and reflect the general extent of each ticket category within the stadium.”

FIFA even added that this reshuffling of category boundaries was shifted to accommodate new PMA supporter sections. They also said, “Following the Final Draw and the opening of the PMA Supporter sales phase, those indicative maps were updated to highlight the areas intended for PMA Supporters. By adding these details to the maps, FIFA aimed to help PMA Supporters identify sections where supporters of the same team could reasonably expect to be seated together, subject to availability and final allocation.”

Even though FIFA has claimed this change is lawful and legitimate, fans do not seem to be buying its new narrative. With Iran joining despite war tensions, the hype for the World Cup seems to be at its peak. It is yet to be seen whether FIFA will reconsider its stance on this seating backlash.
