Tom Brady wrote a tribute to a legend, but an embarrassing mistake in his newsletter has forced a groveling apology

Tom Brady has once again issued a heartfelt apology to the family of baseball legend Tim McCarver after a major mix-up in his weekly newsletter. According to Daily Mail, it seems like even GOATs can have a bit of a fumble sometimes, as Brady mistakenly paid tribute to McCarver’s passing three years after he actually died.

Brady’s newsletter went out with a touching eulogy for the World Series winner, making it sound like McCarver had just passed away. “The great Tim McCarver passed away last week,” Brady wrote. He praised McCarver’s work as a lead analyst for FOX, noting “Tim called more than 20 World Series in his career. He was fantastic at his job. Insightful, analytical, passionate, and immensely likable.”

Brady even mentioned how McCarver’s “likability” came to mind as he prepared for his own second off-season self-scout as a broadcaster. The problem, of course was that Tim McCarver, the former Fox analyst, actually passed away in February 2023. Just 35 minutes after the initial newsletter hit inboxes, a follow-up quickly landed, confirming McCarver’s actual passing date and blaming the embarrassing error on a “proofreading mistake.”

This is the kind of mistake you double-check five times

Brady has really leaned into taking responsibility, kicking off his latest newsletter by directly addressing the mistake. “Before we get into this week’s newsletter, I want to take a moment to once again apologize to the McCarver family and all of Tim’s friends and colleagues for the error in the last newsletter referencing his passing as if it had just occurred,” he wrote.

He explained that he had been thinking about the anniversary of McCarver’s passing when he started writing, and “through the editing and proofreading process, that key phrasing got cut and changed, and then wasn’t caught in time. I feel badly about it, still.”

Brady didn’t mince words, acknowledging that there were “no excuses.” He emphasized his career-long commitment to preparation, execution, and taking responsibility when things fall short. “That was true on the field, it’s true in the booth, and it’s true for this newsletter. We’re not perfect, but we’ll always do our best,” he stated.

For those who might not know, Tim McCarver was a true legend in baseball. He was an All-Star catcher who snagged two World Series titles with the St. Louis Cardinals. After his playing days, he transitioned into an iconic broadcasting career, calling an incredible 24 World Series for ABC, CBS, and Fox. His 18-year partnership with Joe Buck at Fox was particularly memorable for so many fans.

This little hiccup comes during what’s already been a super busy offseason for Brady. He recently participated in a flag football event in Los Angeles, sparking chatter about a 2028 Olympic run. While he and other NFL stars were humbled by Team USA’s pros, Brady still showed flashes of his old magic, shaking off a pass rusher to find Stefon Diggs in the end zone. He later connected with his longtime buddy Rob Gronkowski for a two-point conversion.

Even though his Founders FFC team lost both their round robin games, it was cool to see him out there.
