Following the departure of Adrian Chmielarz and other top developers and People Can Fly, Epic Games has stepped in to completely buyout the studio of which they already had a majority stake in. The Polish studio is probably best known for their work on the Painkiller franchise and last year’s Bulletstorm, is also the lead developer on the next iteration of one of Microsoft’s most popular franchises: Gears of War: Judgment.
Epic Games and People Can Fly have been working together for some time. Painkiller got them noticed by Epic, who then contacted the developer for help on the PC version of Gears of War. According to Polygon, their successful working relationship led to the developer getting sole responsibility for Gears of War: Judgment.
From the comments made following the announcement of the purchase, it doesn’t appear to have affected the development of the game. Mark Rein of Epic Games explains that the departure of the studio figures was a result of the buyout, but everyone left as friends.
Gears of War: Judgment is scheduled for release on the Xbox 360 in 2013.
